Etc etc etc the whole "3 piece superiority" myth is actually just a bold faced lie when it comes to old-school parts. Bullseye were probably as strong as Takagi, people would twist the shaft. Profiles 3PC were fairly strong too, I think they've gotten stronger since they moved from box arms. Probably the strongest old-school crank was Schwinn "Diamond" from old Continentals/Suburban/27" road bikes. So Takagi would spring easier, but spring back when Sugino would bend. Takagis were far lighter and the metal was harder, but they were thinner too. They got their strength from being heavy. Sugino OPC were kind of strong, people liked them, but they weren't properly tempered. No really, they're either lying or limiting themselves to 401 Flights. You're right, all these guys that talk up 3-piece cranks in any discussion of old school parts are mostly talking out their bottom ends. I have a set of 1980s 180 flights in the box w/warranty for my 86 RL project. I put my balls to the wall they never bent & had a nice chrome finish for a OPC. in 1986, i too couldnt afford 3 pieces on my old GT-BMX & bought the Tioga Task Force OPC. Takagi one piece cranks,as well as the tioga task force, were some of the toughest OPC's.
